Mistress Judith and Master Stephen  are a strange couple.

Some say the mistress is the natural child of the Bishop of Caerleon, others that she was in the entourage of Queen Henrietta Maria. However, it is said that she was expelled for drunkeness and lewd behaviour. Whatever the truth about her past, she wandered into the camp early one morning and adopted Master Stephen as her own, for reasons no one can account for. When sober she is an accomplished needlewoman and many examples of her work can be seen around the camp.

Master Stephen purports to be an old soldier who served as a musketeer for the Swedes in the Baltic, Poland and Germany, though the only fighting he has ever been seen to do is with Mistress Judith. He says that he returned to England to fight for the King and sustained his crippling injuries at the battle of Marston Moor. Mistress Judith says that he was crippled falling from a brewers dray when he was drunk. He can be seen around the camp begging for food from the cooks, gambling, drinking and telling war stories - some of which may be true. On no account give him money for he will waste it on licentious behaviour, but gifts of food are most welcome.

In real life Judith is a retired teacher and Stephen is a retired Civil Servant.
